Kingdom Come

Yes, I’m still covering some comic books / graphic novels that have influenced me, with a focus on the writers.

Kingdom Come was originally a four-issue limited series by DC Comics that came out in 1996, then was later released as a graphic novel. It was one of DC’s Elseworlds books, which meant it was a story that did not take place within the general, accepted worlds and time lines of the regular DC super heroes universe.

The story of Kingdom Come takes place a few years in the future. The major super heroes all of his know, such as Superman and Batman and Wonder Woman, etc., have mostly retired or gone into hiding or just plain aren’t around all that much. A new breed of heroes has mostly replaced them, heroes who are barely heroes, making it harder than ever to tell the difference between the good guys and the bad guys. Seeing the dangers brought about by these new super powers, a band of the more familiar heroes (again, Superman, etc.) try to step back into the fray and to calm down the youngsters. It doesn’t go very well. A war among the super beings erupts. Meanwhile, Lex Luthor and some other bad guys are waiting in the wings to steal power for themselves. And Batman … well, Batman is biding his time doing what he does best, lurking in the dark waiting for the right moment to make his own moves, even if he is now an old man.

Final Fantasy is the game series that favorites by most RPG players. Final Fantasy is a RPG (role playing game) genre. The first series of Final Fantasy which is Final Fantasy I was released on 1987 in Japan for console Super Nintendo. The release of the game: Final Fantasy is aims to restore Squaresoft as the developer from bankruptcy. The game was sold successfully in the market and lead to the making of the next Final Fantasy game sequel. The next sequel of Final Fantasy I which is Final Fantasy II also reaps great success in the market. This successful leads Squaresoft continue making the next sequels of Final Fantasy game. Until 2010 there are 13 series of Final Fantasy that have been release on the market. Then besides the RPG series, Squaresoft develop other genre of the game Final Fantasy such as tactical-RPG, action-adventure, MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing), and racing. Final Fantasy then becomes one of the largest Media Franchise.

Final Fantasy is created by Hironobu Sakaguchi. The developer Squaresoft, the owner of Final Fantasy Franchise now bears the name Square Enix. Squaresoft has merger with another game publisher company, Enix which is also one of the successful companies that produced and published games such as Dragon Quest and Star Ocean. Before merged with Enix, Squaresoft almost collapsed because having loss from 3D animation movie project, Final Fantasy: The Spirit Within that made for Hollywood Box Office market. The remarkable success behind Final Fantasy game series seems has made Squaresoft confidence too soon to make 3D animation movie project, Final Fantasy: The Spirit Within which spent so much cost compared to the profits.

The art of cinema is the art of illusion, and those illusions grow more convincing each year through computer graphics.  We might be driven to ask, then, “Why use miniatures at all?”

Well, for several reasons, miniatures remain a viable method to create visual effects sequences.

#1) Inherent reality.  Miniatures – even unconvincing ones – are, at the least, believable as physical objects because they actually are physically real.  While miniatures do require detailing to look like the full-scale objects they represent, they do not require careful simulation of physics, or lighting, or the careful construction of physical irregularities found in any real object, which are required for any computer-generated object to appear photoreal.

#2) CG costs just as much as miniatures do.  People have said that CG is cheaper, but that’s not really the case.

Most of your cost in an effects shot is salary – and traditional modelmakers often work for lower hourly rates than professional 3d artists, simply because CGI has more job opportunities these days (not just movies but video games) and traditional effects artists are a bit more desperate for work.

Then consider the cost of high-end hardware and animation software, plugins, etc, which can easily run into the thousands or tens of thousands of dollars.  Granted, you can easily spend thousands of dollars making an elaborate large-scale miniature scene as well, but it’s probably not going to cost more than the tools required for a CG artist’s setup.

Truthfully, miniatures are still a viable option for many shots even though they aren’t as new or popular as CG.

It all depends on the nature of the shot.

In the past one decade, the Internet has become quite popular and it would not be an exaggeration to say that Internet has in fact become a part of every day life. The Internet is a heterogeneous network environment and this is where Java comes into play. The motto of Java is “Write Once, Run Anywhere”. Hence, a Java based 3D graphics library, if it can run ‘anywhere’, it would be of immense use in the Internet and this is the reason for the increasing use of Java based tools. 

The comparative survey of these tools deals with the features, drawbacks and the scope of their use in the future. Also in conclusion, a short analysis has been made in terms of how the end-users can benefit from these tools and libraries, as well as analyzing the target segments for these tools.

Java based graphics tools can be classified into two categories [14]:

Ø  Low Level Graphics APIs.

The features of low level graphics APIs include access to Low Level OpenGL primitives and better performance. However, there are some related drawbacks including the need for the developers to have professional graphics programming experience and increased development time, as it is complex to a certain extent. There are two major tools associated with Low Level Graphics today:

§  LWJGL

Ø  Screen Graph based Java APIs.
